August is in full swing

We have started the year off with lots of learning. get a feel for some of it here.

All students have been designing pinwheels to share their artistic skills with me. We discussed Peace and looked at maps and reviewed maps. We also helped this lead us into our next projects, which are listed below.

Kindergarten- Learning about lines and how we have them all around us. We looked at different types of lines and we then thought of places we had seen them in the world. We also practiced drawing them ourselves. We then got to create those lines on a final work of art by using a screaming crayon and then coloring lightly. We are learning how crayons can make different kinds of marks by whispering, talking, and screaming. We will end our week with pinwheels and hopefully will get to add the finishing touches to our rainbow lines.

1st- We have been reviewing lines and drawing them with crayons to make a pattern and learning how crayons can be used for whispering, talking, and screaming. Students used screaming crayons to make their creations, we all painted with watercolor and learned how to properly use watercolors and we seen the magic that is a watercolor resist. We will ad the final touches to finish off our Patriotic themed artworks.

2nd- Second graders learned about print making, texture, and how to use our pencils and scissors to finalize the addition of shapes to our works. We will be adding a frame and taking our test as well to see what they know.

3rd- We got excited about looking at fireworks. We talked about what we seen and how we could draw them and them starting using the crayons to scream or to talk. After our crayon fireworks we created on our paper we were given the opportunity to turn our white papers into dark black skies with beautiful fireworks by creating a watercolor resist that we could use for our background. Now we have to start working on drawing what we see and creating answers and understanding of how to make something we see uniquely our own in the world of art. We will top it off with our own interpretation of the Statute of Liberty.

4th-Is doing a very favorite project of mine they are experimenting with lines and how to use space and line and shape to create interesting designs within their paper space. I have been excited to see them using the Patriotic theme to make their Zentangles come to life.

5- Fifth grade talked about the United States and the wonderful opportunities that we have here. We also discussed how this could inspire art. We looked at memorials, monuments, pictures of various symbols of the American culture, and then finished off with looking at works of art that we Patriotic in their inspiration. I asked the students to look at a work of art by Jasper Johns and then think of how we could use three images to create a work of art that stacks, the kids were given freedom to create as they liked as long as it kept with our patriotic theme.

I am so excited to be here at Harbins this year!
